Boxxle Releases the top 10 Boxed Wines to taste in 2016
In the past, boxed wines have gotten a bum rap. Not anymore. Today, the variety of boxed wines is impressive with producers offering everything from Moscato to Monastrell and many smaller, family-owned wineries selling boxed versions of their premium wines including Cabernet Sauvignons, Chardonnays, Pinot Grigios and organics.
Boxxle, the premium 3-liter boxed wine dispenser, released its list of top 10 boxed wines to taste in 2016 (price listed is per 3-liter box, which is the equivalent of four bottles). These 10 amazing wines will change the way you think about boxed wines forever.
Black Box Merlot — Displays aromas of leathery plums and cinnamon-spiced oak. The palate is smooth, medium weight and aged-textured with sweet red currant flavors. It finishes long and warm with resolved tannins. This Merlot has acidity that allows versatility in pairing with food. $20;
Maipe Malbec — Aged 12 months in French oak, this Malbec possesses a softer style than the brand’s Cabernet Sauvignon with more minerality as well as blackberry, white chocolate, incense and graphite characteristics. Deep ruby and purple hued, it is rich and full-bodied. $29;
Noceto Sangiovese — Modeled after the Tuscan Chianti, this wine is medium-bodied, fruit-packed, well-balanced and versatile with food. This easy-drinking wine is widely regarded as the best Sangiovese in California. The 2012 vintage is Noceto's 23rd vintage release. Grapes were sourced from 19 separate lots of six different clonal selections. The resulting blend consists of 84% estate grapes and 14% from neighboring vineyards. $60;
Peterson Old School Zinfandel — Old School is an easy-drinking, no-thinking Zin. Mixed berries with plenty of spice and creamy oak introduce and finish this wine. The juicy dark fruit, smooth texture, easy tannins and bright acidity make for a popular go-to wine. $76;
Andegavia Pinot Noir — Sourced from an estate vineyard in Sonoma’s Russian River Valley, the 2013 Merrill Pinot Noir is rich and complex with light red fruits, hints of spice and a silky smooth finish. This is a 100% Russian River Valley Pinot Noir. $75;
Vrac Rose — Medium-bodied and dry, this wine provides a classic blend of Syrah, Grenache and Cinsault. Hints of strawberry and raspberry, and a touch of acidity make this an incredibly easy drinking quaff. Pairs well with lighter fare, salads and fish, or as a cocktail with cheese. $30;
Bota Box Pinot Grigio —This delightful medium-bodied wine has flavors of ripe peach, nectarine and bright citrus with a refreshing, clean finish. $20;
Naked Grape Chardonnay - This Chardonnay has an essence of tropical pineapple and peach fruit – and it celebrates it for what it is. This varietal bares more fruit, (not oak) and has stuck to its guns for a long time. $20;
La Petite Frog Picpoul De Pinet - Comes from a little known white varietal from Southern France called Picpoul (pronounced peek-pool). Crisp and fruit driven, this dry white wine is named for its high acidity, it translates to “stings the lip”, this particular example also sees no oak so the true characteristics of the grape really shine through goes well with fish, chicken or pasta dishes. $25;
Fantini Montepulciano D'Abruzzo DOC– 100% Montepulciano from vineyards located within the townships of Ortona, San Salvo and Pollutri. Ruby red with garnet reflections, the bouquet is fruity and quite persistent, reminiscent of red fruits, marasca cherries and plums with vanilla nuances; full-bodied, with good balance and firm tannins, flavorful and long on the palate, immediately appealing and versatile. $26
