Is Wine Really Good for You?

Posted on

Boxxle is all about wine, right? We’re all about improving the experience, making it easy to have wine anytime, anywhere, right from the tap. We’re in this business because we love wine. But is wine really good for you?

It is. It isn’t. It is. It isn’t. We hear experts going back and forth. No one seems able to make up their minds. As medical science advances and new discoveries are made, it is understandable that things we thought once good for us, really weren’t all that great. Maybe they are really just innocuous, or perhaps turn out to be harmful. We wanted to know the latest on the topic, so we went to the experts to seek out all of the latest news.

Here’s what we found. We think it is pretty good news for all of us wine-lovers out there.

The short answer to the question of whether wine is good for you or not is; it depends. Everything in moderation seems to be the key to making wine a healthy part of your diet.

Resveratrol

A recent study by the Litwin-Zucker Research Center at the North Shore/LIJ Health System in Manhasset found that the anti-inflammatory properties in wine may also help slow the onset of memory loss and alzheimer's for some people. They think it is the Resveratrol that does the trick and that it stops the formation of beta-amyloid proteins which are what the plaque in the brains of alzheimer's sufferers is made of.

Medical Daily, which covers medical news that has been vetted for real clinical significance, reported that a studyin the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry found that the Resveratrol in wine may have a number of additional health benefits. The study found that red wine in particular, may:

  • Protect again cells against mental decline
  • Help keep your heart muscles healthier, and be a good addition to a routine of regular heart-healthy exercise.
  • Provide cell protection that can help us live longer, healthier lives.
  • Reduce blood clots, lowering risk of heart disease.

A studyby the US National Library of Medicine at The National Institutes of Health found that moderate wine consumption lowers the risk of type 2 diabetes. Findings suggest that moderate drinkers could lower their risk by up to 30 percent. Other studies indicate that red wine can also significantly increase the levels of heart-healthy HDL cholesterol.

That’s worth toasting to!

How Much is Too Much

Dietary guidelines generally suggest no more than two drinks a day for women and three for men. Keep in mind these are general guidelines. Your own doctor can provide advice that takes into account your overall health.

What counts as one drink?

  • Five ounces of wine
  • Twelve ounces of beer
  • One and half ounces of liquor like whisky or vodka.

We’re thrilled that wine really can be part of a healthy diet. But let’s be realistic, a glass of wine a day isn’t going to keep the doctor away. So, here are a few tips on how to maintain a well-rounded health routine that includes the wine you love.

Eat a Heart-Healthy Diet

Combine your wine with a heart-healthy diet that includes a lot of whole foods like fresh, green vegetables and fruits. Here are some of our favorite foods. A lot of them go really well with a good glass of red or white too.

  • Fatty fish, like salmon or tuna
  • Veggies such as spinach, collard greens, carrots and beets.
  • Nuts and seeds including almonds, walnuts, sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds.

Adding healthy food isn’t enough. Be sure to also cut down on non-essentials, especially sugar and processed food. Fortunately dark chocolate is still on the healthy list, so enjoy it with your glass of red at the end of the day.

Keep Your Heart Pumping

Incorporating regular cardiovascular exercise into your life is going to keep your heart, muscles and bones happy and healthy. Climb the stairs at work, take a bike ride, take the dog for a walk, swim, row or jump rope. What you do is less important than just doing something on a regular basis.

Stay Strong

Keep your muscles and bones strong as you age with regular weight-bearing exercises. The good news is that a lot of what you may be doing for your heart-health is also good for your bones, including hiking, jogging and climbing stairs. If your cardio includes mostly swimming or cycling, try adding some weight lifting, yoga, tai chi or tennis into the mix.

Get out there and get healthy, and if you are making wine part of your routine, don’t forget your Boxxle wine dispenser.

Here’s to your health!
